Special Delivery: Baby Born With Help From PA Police

A 23-year-old mom can thank the police for helping her bring her new son into the world.

West Earl police officers Craig Johnson and Josh Mertz were dispatched to a report of a woman in labor on Thursday, Mar. 3 in the early morning, Jordan Byrnes WETPD Public Information Officer writes in the release.

Madison Gadsden had been waiting for EMS to arrive, but by the time the police arrived she was having contractions, and pretty soon the baby’s head was seen. 

Officer Johnson is a certified and experienced EMT, so he stepped into action supporting the baby’s head and assisted with the delivery of the baby. 

Josiah Gadsden was welcomed into the world at 4:23 a.m.presented himself to the world. 

"Officer Johnson cleared the baby’s airways using an aspirator bulb, and wrapped the baby in towels to keep him warm," Byrnes says. "Officer Johnson clamped Gadsden’s umbilical cord and monitored the baby’s and mother’s conditions until EMS arrived three minutes after the baby was born."

The mom and baby were taken to Lancaster General’s Women’s and Babies hospital in stable condition.
